Canadian Expat Association asked to come before Citizenship Standing Committee

Announcement The Canadian Expat Association has just been requested to come before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration to provide information regarding the consequences of Bill C-37. This will occur on Thursday, June 11th.

Bill C-37, an amendment to Canada's Citizenship and Immigration Act came into effect on April 17, this year. As a result, any children that are born abroad and then subsequently have children of their own outside of Canada at some point in their future will not be able to pass on Canadian Citizenship. This is the case even if they return to Canada to complete school and live most of their lives under the Maple Leaf.

The objective of enacting the legislation was to stop Canadian Citizenship from being passed on to endless generations of individuals that have neither ties nor interest in Canada. What this bill fails to do, is to take into account people that have legitimate, deep and meaningful ties to the country.
